Saaremaa Opera festival 21.-26. July 2020
The first opera festival in Estonia was held in 1999 in Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa. The festival takes place at the medieval Episcopal Castle of Kuressaare, the yard of which allows for the construction of an opera house for up to 2000 spectators. Since 2008, the festival has been organised by Eesti Kontsert as the Saaremaa Opera Festival.
By now numerous prestigious companies from all across the world have performed at the festival: Estonian NO and Vanemuine Theatre, Black American Opera (Broadway), Latvian National Opera, the Nemerovitsh-Dantshenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, Ankara State Opera and Ballet Theatre, Moscow Helikon Opera and opera companies from Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi (Georgia), Ukrainian National Opera, Teatro di Milano (Italy) and Wroclaw Opera (Poland) have all presented their best artistic productions at Saaremaa.
